Vara Winery Brings Home Awards from International Competitions in San Francisco and New York

Vara Winery & Distillery received a total of nine medals at the 2020 San Francisco International Wine Competition, and 9 medals at the Annual New York International Wine Competition including recognition as the Spain Cava Winery of the Year. 

“In a year full of trials and tribulations and uncertainty it is incredibly gratifying to be recognized by two very prestigious wine competitions,” says Jessie McKeon, Sales & Distribution Manager at Vara Winery & Distillery. “The San Francisco International Wine Competition is judged by true leaders and professionals in the industry.

To see our wines appreciated on a world stage is a huge honor. The judging panel for The New York International Wine Competition are industry leaders, the people that choose what goes on a wine list or in a specialty bottle shop. We are thrilled that they collectively rated our lineup of wines so highly.”

The San Francisco International Wine Competition is one of the largest and most influential wine competitions in the world. Founded in 1980, they take pride in their integrity in impartiality throughout the judging process.

The blind tasting process guarantees that every entry is judged fairly and given equal consideration. This year over 8,000 wines were judged from countries all over the world, and nine local Vara wine selections received medals; a huge win in a prestigious competition.

The 10th Annual New York International Wine Competition includes top wine buyers from the New York Metropolitan Area including Sommeliers, Restaurant Owners, Retail Store Buyers, Beverage Managers, Distributors and Importers that judge wines by category and price. 

“At Vara we set out with a goal to make wines that could compete on a world stage, thanks to our extremely talented wine making team and relationships with fantastic grape growers, we are doing just that,” said McKeon. “Instead of letting 2020 slow us down, we are doubling down our efforts to ensure every wine we make is the wine that you want in your glass.
