Focus on Key Ingredients: Choose dishes that use a few high-quality, affordable ingredients. A few of our favorite budget friendly dishes include lemon beurre blanc pasta topped with grilled chicken. This dish is super simple to prepare, and it goes a long way. A hearty charcuterie platter is always a hit, and easy to put together. Aldi offers a wonderful choice of cheeses and meats for a good price. Your platter does not have to be fancy. And a charcuterie platter can be served anytime. Supplement with nice sides like a tomato bruschetta, hummus and other side dishes. You could even do Greek Salad Skewers, which will add a pop of color.

Menu Ideas
Brisket paired with a nice salad is also a favorite. You can have fun topping bar for brisket sandwiches. You will want to include BBQ sauce, sliced cheese, and horseradish sauce. For this you can offer brisket slices or chopped brisket.
For a fall or winter get together, think about doing a soup or chili for the main dish. This choice is budget friendly as it can stretch a long way to feed a crowd. Include a topping bar with sour cream, cheese, onions and other toppings
Charcuterie Platters are another popular choice for parties on a budget. I often entertain with just a beautiful charcuterie board that is inexpensive to create. I opt to include a selection of wine to pair with the board. Charcuterie boards really can be a meal. I will usually include some side items like a homemade dip with crackers or chips. Bruschetta pairs well with a charcuterie too.

Soups, casseroles, and desserts like chocolate mousse can be made a day or two in advance.
Utilize your freezer. Many dishes can be made weeks in advance and frozen.
Double up on recipes and freeze half for future dinner parties or busy weeknights.
Buy a membership to Costco, Sam’s, BJ’s or other warehouse to buy items in bulk. Your savings pay for your membership. NOTE: A Costco Executive membership earns cash back at the end of the year, and can pay for your membership.
DIY Delights for Your Fun Dinner Party:
Homemade elements like bread, dips, or infused water not only save money but also add a personal touch. Hummus and Guacamole are super easy to make, go a long way, and are huge hits when entertaining. They also are budget friendly, and can serve a large gathering.
Infuse your water with slices of citrus – orange, lime, or lemon. You can also use herbs – basil and mint are two of my favorites. Both basil and mint can be grown in containers, making it very inexpensive to elevate your gathering.
Incorporating seasonal decorations can elevate your fun dinner party décor without high costs.
Decor on a Budget
No one likes spending a ton of money on decor. My go to’s are to look around my house and see what I can repurpose. I often use baskets for crackers, bread, chips. Before using, I place a washable liner inside – you can use cloth napkins, bar towels, pieces of fabric. Let your creativity run loose! Elegant party decor does not mean you have to purchase something new.
What type of linens will you use to put your food on? I have used color sarongs, Turkish towels, placements, or even an old shawl.
Set the Mood with Lighting: Use candles, string lights, or dimmable lamps to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Battery-operated LED candles are a safe and cost-effective choice. Fairy lights in jars or bottles add a nice touch and are inexpensive to make. Use clear or colored mason jars (find these at thrift or vintage shops). Wash them in warm soapy water, and air dry. Then drop in the fairy lights, and voilá instant decor! You can also place fairy lights in wine glasses, wine or liquor bottles. If the bottles have labels, soak them off in hot water. If you don’t like the look of fairy lights, use battery powered tea lights. The bonus with these ideas is you can reuse them multiple times.
Will your food all be on one level or do you want to have a multi-level display?
This is not hard to pull off. You can use square or oblong baskets turned upside down, with a cute towel or cloth over it.
You can use vintage wooden boxes of different heights.
Use cake stands from thrift stores, vintage shops, or yard sales.
Mix and match your pieces and make it fun and whimsical.
Want a fresh cohesive look? Spray paint old items.
your serving dishes at different heights are books. Pile your books, and cover them, and voilá – instant elevation that looks visually stunning.
Think out of the box and see what you have in your home you can repurpose.
Repurpose and Upcycle: Look around your home for items that can be repurposed as décor. Glass jars can become vases or candle holders, and an old scarf can serve as a table runner.
Tip:
Use herbs or greenery to decorate your table. You’ll often find me using greenery to bring a pop of Spring color to my table.
Visit local farmers markets or co-ops for inexpensive flowers. Arrange them in small clusters to add a touch of elegance to your table.
Another option is to use silk flowers; they are perfect for brightening up a space
Create an Inviting Ambiance
Creating an inviting ambiance at your gathering is key to setting the mood. Having the set an inviting environment ensures your guests feel comfortable and engaged.
Lastly, a great way to conclude your fun dinner party is by sharing a dessert that complements the theme of the evening.
Curate a playlist that complements the evening’s theme, featuring relaxing jazz, classical, or acoustic tunes that allow for easy conversation.
Use music streaming services that offer ready-made playlists for different moods and occasions, a
Invest in a wireless speaker to seamlessly manage music from your phone, keeping wires out of sight.
Incorporate interactive elements like a DIY cocktail station or a make-your-own dessert bar. These not only entertain guests but also add a personalized touch to your event, encouraging mingling and interaction.
For an added touch, print out simple recipes and make them available for guests to take home. This ensures that they leave with both great memories and new culinary inspiration.
Optimize Your Time
When planning any type of gathering, one thing that I have learned over years of entertaining, is to involve others. No one likes to come to a gathering empty-handed. So when you are entertaining on a budget of $75 or less, ask people to bring something.
It’s no secret that Jim and I love wine. We have an amazing array of budget friendly wines, and we love to share those wines with our friends, and guests. But, if our guests want something other than wine, we ask them to bring their drink of choice.
I thought the first time we did this that people would be offended. I was surprised, but they happily will bring their favorite drink. We never show up to someone’s home without bringing something. People love to be a part of things. So let them help out, and they’ll happily bring something; they don’t want to come empty handed.
When planning a gathering around a specific theme – a holiday or a event, or theme (like a garden party or pool party):
send the invites digitally (text or email).
Ask them to bring something specific – ie – if it is a pool party, I’ll supply the burgers and hotdogs, ask my guests to bring their favorite picnic sides.
Ask them to bring 8 copies of their recipes to share with others. This makes guests happy, and it involves them, and builds community within your circle of friends.
Always include an RSVP – this helps in planning, and keeps you within your budget!
Delegate Tasks: On the day of the party, ask people to help. This makes them feel like they are contributing. Assign simple tasks like setting the table, serving drinks, or plating food.
Create a to-do list and timeline to stay organized.
Tip: Use a whiteboard to list tasks for guests to choose from and help out as they arrive.
Set Up in Stages: Break down your preparation into manageable stages over several days. Tackle shopping one day, prep work the next, and final touches on the day of the event. Store prepped food in labeled containers to streamline final preparations.
Hack: Use slow cookers and instant pots to free up the stove top and oven space.
Keep it Simple. Remember, the goal is to enjoy the evening. A streamlined menu and décor will reduce stress and allow you to spend more time with your guests.
Stick to tried-and-true recipes you’re comfortable with.
Use single-serve dishes or family-style serving to minimize plating time.
Use paper plates, or plastic plates. Paper recycles easier than plastic, but I’ve found that I like plastic plates. To keep things simple, I just run a sink of hot water, wash them up and then reuse them.
Use colorful plastic cups for drinks; keep a sharpie marker for people to decorate their cups or write their name on them.
For wine drinkers, I use nice plastic stemless glasses because so much of our entertaining is “inside / outside”. No broken glass on the back porch is a good thing!
Focus on the Experience
Personal touches are important. Add small, thoughtful details like handwritten place cards or personalized menus. These touches show your guests that you’ve put thought and care into the evening. These are simple and easy to create, and really make your guests feel special.
Use your best handwriting or print place cards using elegant fonts.
Create personalized touches using inexpensive craft supplies like ribbon, twine, and stamps.
It’s important to engage your guests and make them feel cared for. Create a welcoming environment where guests feel comfortable and engaged. Encourage conversation and connect guests with shared interests. Prepare a few conversation starters or ice-breakers if your guests don’t know each other well. We all remember those silly games we played as kids. It’s perfectly fine, and fun to use some of those ideas even when the guests are adults. This is critical when you’ve included an array of people that may not all know each other.
When Jim and I entertain, we include church friends, neighbors, and local business people we know. For us, it is about building community. That is at the forefront of all of our entertaining. Everyone has different backgrounds, so it is really fun to see everyone chatting and getting to know each other
Tips
Place small bowls of snacks around the room to encourage mingling.
Relax and Enjoy: The most important aspect of any dinner party is to enjoy the time with your guests. Relax, be present, and savor the moment.
Take a few moments to yourself before the guests arrive to calm your mind.
Additional Tips, Tricks, and Hacks
Batch Cooking: Save time by cooking in large batches and freezing portions. This can be a lifesaver for last-minute gatherings or when you have a packed schedule. Whenever Jim or I make soups or stews, we will often make more than we will eat. Then we can freeze what is left. We can quickly pull something out of the freezer for an impromptu dinner with friends. We can use it for ourselves on a night we don’t want to cook, but want to eat at home.
Simple Yet Stylish Table Setting:
Use neutral-colored tablecloths and napkins as a base and add pops of color with plates, glasses, or centerpieces.
If you are entertaining in multiple areas – in our case, we often open our sliding door and entertain by pool and inside. I put a table cloth on the dining room table; a colorful table cloth on the table outside. I also use our kitchen island for the food, and repurpose sarongs, turkish towels, or even colorful placemats.
Shop Smart: Keep an eye out for sales and discounts on non-perishable items and party supplies. Stock up when prices are low.
Multi-Functional Items: Invest in versatile items that can be used for various occasions. For example, a simple white serving platter can be dressed up or down depending on the event.
Explore different cuisines for your fun dinner party to offer your guests a variety of flavors and experiences.
Hosting fun dinner parties for $75 or less is easy. With a bit of strategic planning and creativity it becomes simple. Focus on high-impact elements, repurposing what you already have. Incorporate personal touches, and you create a memorable evening that won’t break the bank. So, gather your friends, relax, and enjoy the experience of hosting a beautiful memorable dinner party without breaking your budget.
