Hills & Dales Estate
No visit to LaGrange, Georgia is complete without a stop at Hills & Dales Estate. The home, built by Fuller Callaway and completed in 1916 is an Italian style villa with classic Palladian accents, predominately the front semi-cirular portico with Ionic columns is the most recognized feature of the home. However, the gardens, the most well preserved gardens of the 19th century, are spectacular. I suggest planning a visit during the Spring, Summer, or early Fall to view the gardens at their peak – they are gorgeous!
The gardens were begun on the property in 1841 by Sara Ferrell, 74 years prior to Fuller Callaway and his wife Ida Cason Callaway began building their home Hills & Dales Estate in 1914. Sara planted six terraced gardens filled with native and exotic plants. The Ferrell Gardens were open to all who wanted to enjoy them until Sarah Ferrell’s death in 1903. The gardens saw courtships grow and I’m sure marriage proposals in the secluded areas of the gardens. The children loved to play in the maze of boxwoods, and one of those children was Fuller Callaway, one of the textile manufacturing industry’s titans. After Sarah Ferrell’s death, Callaway purchased the property in 1911 and in 1914 he and his wife, Ida, began building their magnificent 13,000 square foot home, known today as Hills and Dales Estate.
The tour of the home is absolutely stunning, and a true peek into how the Callaway family lived. The majority of the furnishings are original to the home, making it just that much better for visitors to envision daily life at Hills & Dales. You’ll see where the pool area was, the poolhouse, greenhouse, and more.
Prior to a home tour, I suggest a stop at the visitors center, and do be sure to watch the film – it’s an overview of all of the gardens and the home.
LaGrange Art Museum
Located in the former Troup County Jail building built in 1892, the LaGrange Art Museum began when a group of local artists formed the CVAA (Chattahoochee Valley Art Association), and they wanted a venue to showcase the work of local area artists. The museum has gone through several name changes over the years, but at the center of their mission is to foster community involvement.
Today there is a permanent space adjacent to the museum dedicated to teaching adults, teachers, and children, and is a community meeting location. The museum has traveling exhibits as well as a permanent collection of art. If you are an art lover, don’t miss a stop into the LaGrange Art Museum.
Legacy Museum on Main
Located on Main Street, in the heart of downtown, the Legacy Musuem tells the story of West Georgia and LaGrange. Here you’ll encounter the Nancy Harts Militia, the oldest bale of cotton, the history of textiles interwoven with the Callaway family, and can even take a stroll across the Horace King covered bridge.
I am fascinated by the story of Horace King. King, born into slavery in 1807, part black, part white, and part Catawba Indian who sported a soul patch centuries before it become cool, and long before jazz was born, learned how to build bridges using a technique called the “Town Lattice-Truss”. King learned the technique along with John Godwin. King was so good at bridge building that John Godwin, who was King’s slave owner, made Horace King his partner in a his fledging business.
Crisscrossing the South, Godwin and King built bridges, helping the South to expand its infrastructure. The two men building a bridge linking Columbus, Georgia to Alabama across the Chattahoochee River. The original bridge built by Godwin and King got washed out in a flood, and once again the duo received a contract to rebuild the bridge. This time, with an agreement from Godwin, that if they met their short deadline he would set King free.
The two men finished the bridge on time, and true to his word, Godwin honored his promise of setting King free; even though it did take an act of the Alabama legislature to do so. After John Godwin’s death in 1859, King continued the business, working as a free man behind enemy lines, and building more than 100 bridges.
Take a stroll across the bridge…you will be walking in the footsteps of the history of LaGrange.
West Point Lake
This is a gorgeous area, and one of the best outdoor spaces I’ve found, making outdoor fun on West Point Lake one of the best things to do in LaGrange for a weekend getaway. Here are just a few of the activities around West Point Lake: birdwatching, boating, camping, fishing, hiking, and photography. The lake is actually a man-made reservoir that encompasses 35-miles along the Chattahoochee River. It’s 525 mile shoreline borders both Georgia and Alabama, and is home to some sweet fishing; don’t forget to pack your rod and reel. You can boat along the lake as well, so head over to Highland Marina for more information on boat rentals. Highland Marina also offers kayak rentals, which is wonderful way to intimately explore the shoreline area of the lake.
Oakfuskee Conservation Area borders West Point Lake is a stunning venue for weddings or parties. We were completely stunned by the incredible views and property of this venue. So, if you are planning a destination wedding or event, be sure to check out Oakfuskee ~ I guarantee it is jaw dropping!

Charlie Joseph’s
For lunch, Charlie Joseph’s is a beloved local institution known for their hot dogs and burgers. This is a great spot for families and groups looking for a casual dining experience.
Taste of Lemon
The food is Southern fare at Taste of Lemon, and is very tasty. But to this writer, the standout is the building. The building is the former Second Methodist Church, which was built in 1892. For me, there is nothing better than to be immersed in history while dining on delicious food.
Offering a menu of “Meat and Three”, Taste of Lemon is Southern comfort food at it’s best. “What is meat and three? What does it mean?” you might ask. Meat and three is a main meat dish served with three sides of your choice. I highly suggest the pineapple casserole – it is mouth-watering delicious!

No visit to LaGrange would be complete without sampling local craft beers at Beacon Brewing. This brewery is known for its innovative brews that reflect the flavors of Georgia. Another local favorite is Wild Leap Brewing, known for its award-winning craft beers and vibrant atmosphere. The brewery often hosts events, live music, and food trucks, making it a fun place to socialize and enjoy the local craft beer scene.
We loved listening to live music out on their dog friendly courtyard! It’s a great way to enjoy a family afternoon, and sip some good cold beer. Hungry? Midnyt Burgers serves up some tasty smash burgers, gooey grilled cheese, and loaded crinkle cut french fries. I’m slightly biased, but I love their grilled cheese – so yummy good!
Wild Leap’s tasting room is welcoming and beautifully designed, allowing guests to sample a variety of beers. From smooth ales to hoppy IPAs, this brewery represents the best of LaGrange’s brewing culture and should not be missed.

The combination of great food and wine makes for an unforgettable experience. And their outdoor space? It’s fantastic, and dog friendly. Dinner
Mare Sol
If you’re in the mood for an unforgettable dining experience, Mare Sol is a must-visit. Known for its eclectic menu that features Southern cuisine with a twist, Mare Sol prides itself on using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.
The ambiance of the restaurant is warm and inviting, making it perfect for a casual dinner or a gathering with friends. The fare is American, and the menu is not extensive, but it is good. I ordered a salad, and it was huge! Jim’s chili was hot, and well balanced with a bite of heat; just the way good chili should be. The standout of the night though was the fried green tomato and shrimp salad ~ it was perfectly balanced and incredible.
Tutto Pepe
Jim and I felt as if we were the only patrons dining in Tutto Pepe; every bit of this restaurant is thoughtfully curated to accent the intimate and romantic atmosphere. The wait staff are helpful but not overbearing. The portions are not large, but just right, allowing you to order multiple courses. The wine choices are not overwhelming; they are carefully chosen to pair well with their food options.
Bucatini, Parmigiano-Reggiano, and Cracked Pepper was excellent! All the flavors were balanced, and the pasta was cooked to perfection! (Photo credit: Jim Hill)
Seared Octopus, with Potato Dumplings, Pepper, and Cream was absolutely mouth-watering, and flavor burst in the mouth was incredible. (Photo credit: Jim Hill)
As we lingered over our meal, the conversations from others wafted around us, like soft background noise. Speaking of our meal, I loved the vintage inspired dishes that our food was served on. They added such a nice, yet whimsical touch to the table.
The waitstaff would quietly remove the dishes from the each course before setting the next course in front of us. From the first bite to the last, there were no complaints; the food was fresh, perfectly balanced, and flavorful; perfect for this food-loving couple. I know this will not be our last visit to LaGrange….or our last meal at Tutto Pepe.
