Long walks with nothing competing for your attention. Sunsets that are worth every single mile. This is also one of the best spots on the entire coast for photography, which Jim never lets me forget. Spend a full day on the island, then come back to Apalachicola for dinner. That combination — wild, unhurried beach access paired with genuine small-town character.
What I Always Make Time For
Every visit, without exception: a long morning at Apalachicola Chocolate & Coffee Company. Non-negotiable. Don’t rush it.
Walking downtown without a plan. In the historic district every block turns up something worth slowing down for: boutiques, bookstores, galleries, antique shops, architectural details that only reveal themselves to people who aren’t in a hurry.
A waterfront walk with no destination. It costs nothing. I’ve solved more problems on slow waterfront walks than in any meeting I’ve ever sat through. Belle’s Winery for wine slushies. Apalachicola is a place that you can visit year-round, which is genuinely not true of every destination I cover. Winter brings mild weather and a quieter version of a town that’s never really loud to begin with. Summer is hot and humid, but if you’ve lived in Florida for more than five minutes, you already know how to pace yourself. The trade-off is fewer crowds and a town that feels even more like your personal discovery.
What to Pack
Pack less than you think. Take jeans and Tshirts, that’s fine. Lean more toward shorts and flowy tops, that’s cool. Fancy a bit of boho with long skirts and a top you can knot, bring it. If you are like me and love dresses, do it. That’s the whole tip. Apalachicola is not fancy. It’s simple, fun, and down to earth. Wear what makes you feel happy and good.
Apalachicola is relaxed and laid back. No heels. No “just in case” outfits. No formal anything.
